Landing

Landing

Lake Walter Long east of town. Austin looked so good to us after an emotionally and physically exhausting day.

Storm Front

Storm Front
Originally uploaded by THOS.
On our second flight out of Denver to Austin we wove around and over a front of towering thunderheads in west Texas, a feat that a pilot said could not be done without the flight control computer working correctly.

The storm arrived in Denver the same time we did. We had a bumpy landing. Our flight out of Denver was still worse. Because of 40+ mph crosswinds and the preceeding jet's backwash we lost the airplane's computer controls on takeoff and had to return to the airport. Before we could land we had to circle in incredible winds at 2000 feet for an hour to burn off fuel and weight. The pilots reassured us that we were not in danger, but there were fire trucks lining the runway as we landed.

Then it took another half hour for the technicians to reset the flight computer so we could take off again - 2 hours late.

Deicing

Deicing

Before we took off we had to wait for the de-icing truck. The flight to Denver was the worst I've ever experienced: huge bumps, and the plane seemed to twist at times.

"Miner's Cabin"

Victorian house
Originally uploaded by THOS.
A "Miner's Cabin" on Main Street. Note how they have added on in the rear to take up most of the lot. In Aspen the preservation code makes it almost impossibe to tear down a house, so most of the old ones have been gutted, renovated and expanded into stealth mansions.

Susie has also recently opened a store on the alley behind that sells housewares and art. It is quite a pot pouri of rugs, kitchen ware, furniture, knick knacks, and other world-tour items.
