The deck at the lakehouse isn't childproof, so big brother guides our 'Little Lulu.'
Victor unloads one of three pallets of limestone for the water feature on the west side. These field stones will line the sides of the stream and pond, with the larger stones to be used for waterfall spill rocks.
We had wine and cheese by the chiminea. The house looked like a palace with the live oaks bare this cold March evening. The greenhouse is the lower lighted room on the right side.
Angel followed us down to the creek, a long scamper across the meadow and through the yaupon and junipers. Although it looks like he is laughing he is actually panting and relaxing.
We enjoyed a long weekend in Snowmass, Colorado just like last year. Staying in Timberline Condos we could ski in and ski out to Fanny Hill slope above the Mall. Upon our noon arrival, A and I made our first of several trips to the local (over-priced) grocery for provender so we could bolster our strength for the afternoon on the slopes. Friday night we were treated to a fireworks show from down below, with the booms echoing across the mountains and down the valley. Ann and Ollie showed up for a late nightcap of Whidby Island Port they brought from Seattle. Our first day on the slopes together we skiied almost the entire mountain (except for Elk Camp and the black diamonds) with glorious fresh snow, clear skies and excellent weather. We had lunch at Gwynn's High Alpine, from which we could see the Wall across the way where crazy young male skiiers were plunging off the thirty-foot cliffs into the powder, only to plunge again down to the next shelf. On Sunday we skiied Elk Camp with its beautiful long views from the top of Snowmass Mountain, the Maroon Creek and Castle Creek Valleys, Pyramid Peak and the Maroon Bells. We had crepes (chicken and mushroom and spinach and raspberry) and Boeuf Bourguignon out on the sun deck at Cafe Suzanne where the camp robbers (Western jays) dived for their lunch. A had an accident trying to speed through the weave (SLOW signs right in front of the entries) on approach to a lift line and caught her left knee behind a protruding metal pole. She skiied the rest of the day, but had pain in the evening. So Monday morning she went to the skier's ER and found she had strained her left ACL and has a torn meniscus, but will be OK with RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). Skiing was over for her for this trip - time for crossword puzzles and knitting. On Monday Ann, Ollie and Tom had a fantastic day skiing Elk Camp and Alpine Meadows, and in the afternoon Tom skied Coney Glade Lift runs (Cabin, Nastar and Velvet Falls) until the lifts closed. Tuesday was travel day and return to home, cats and work. For more pictures go to http://homepage.mac.com/tlowry/PhotoAlbum30.html
Looking for A&O down below from our meeting place at the top of Coney Glade lift.
After coming back from the ski ER she shows off her newly wrapped knee.
Wonderful view all around of Snowmass Mountain and the Maroon Creek Valley
We watched fearless young skiiers jump down 30 foot drops, ski to the edge and drop down below.
On our first day skiing together we skiied Big Burn and Alpine Springs from 10 'til 4. The weather and snow were perfect, and we had a great day. Olie wore his lizzard hat so we could find him.
We stopped on our way down Big Burn to rest our weary legs. I saw this scene and thought of Michael.
Maroon Creek Valley from Aspen to the Aspen Snowmass Wilderness Area. We crossed this range in a 4x4 two summers ago with Michael and Lotta (see July '03 archive).
Flying from Denver to Aspen we had a panoramic view of the Elk Range between Aspen and Crested Butte.
We put a piece of plate glass under the coffee table top so we could display our African collection.
New file cabinet from second-hand office furniture store and fake bamboo from World Market on Tom's side of the bed.
Wearing her new amethyst and silver necklace by a Dripping Springs craftsman.
The six votive candles give a warm glow over the deck table while the blue lights shine along the railing and the pool shows from down below.
We hung the wrought iron candlelabra Michael brought us from Sweden over the table out back. At Beth's suggestion we glued corks to the bottom of each votive candle cup and placed them in the holder.
Gary thought we should collect all our African art in one area. The red wall cover is a wool throw we had on the couch - and a perfect fit for the alcove!
Warren and Susan and Gary and Beth joined us for a fun-filled weekend of exploring and landscaping and decorating. We went to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for inspiration. Warren also helped complete the design for the waterfalls.
'Top Cat' Shadow and 'Under Cat' Tiki love to play this game. Tiki loves it and Shadow cannot resist.
Sitting by the chiminea next to the pool on a cool January evening. We enjoyed some Boursin cheese, table water crackers and chardonay while listening to the creek and the hoot owls.
After family Christmas in Texas we took off for a week with Jev and Sydnor (and daughter Tori) in their Colorado home just five minutes from the lift. Michael, here from Stockholm, Ethan and Kelly went with us to ski the Rockies. Aside from one snowy day the weather was clear and crisp, perfect for carving our turns.
Watching the Rose Bowl after a long day on the slopes. The University of Texas beat University of Michigan by one point in the final two seconds!
